So, Meredith asked me to write a blog post that is kinda challenging. I, of course agreed, and every time I went to it, I stared blankly at the screen for a long time. I asked myself dozens of times: What is my morning routine?
And, I discovered that I have a pretty crappy one. So, I decided to change it. Working from home can be pretty easy to ignore routines, but according to my research, having a routine can help boost productivity, save time, build good habits, increase motivation, decrease stress, and help you achieve goals. Who doesn't want at least one of those things?
The truth is, I used to have a routine, and it used to be awesome. But, life happened and I stopped paying attention to it. So, while I was staring blankly at the Word document in front of me, I decided it was time to start a new routine and this is what I came up with.
6:00 AM wake up. 1 cup water. Workout.
6:30 AM workout done. Check emails/social networks/etc.
7:15 AM Emails done. Eat breakfast, clean.
7:30 AM Cleaning on hold (because it's never done) and I walk the dog, write out goals, prep for day.
8:00 AM Work.
It's been seven days since I started doing this routine and already I can see the above benefits taking affect. My biggest issue before I had my routine was that I was right off to work. I work until 5 or 6 pm every day, and by the time I finish work, I'm tired. I don't want to do anything else. I had to make time for the thing I wanted to get done, and part of a routine is building good habits - like making more time in your day.
