How To: Shop The Perimeter Of The Grocery Store

Hello Everyone,

Today, I wanted to talk about how we should properly be shopping in the grocery store. As I have been on my new, and improved, Paleo/It Works Lifestyle for a few weeks now. I'm proud of that lifestyle, as I feel amazing. So, let's get started...

Most grocery stores have a similar layout... you want to try to buy most of your food items from the perimeter of the store, rather than the center aisles. Why? Because it's healthier for you...trust me. Steering clear from processed, pre-made foods in the inner aisles is the key to clean(er) eating. Stick to fresh fruits, veggies and lean protein.

PRODUCE
On the perimeter, you will find the produce section, which is chock-full of every fruit and veggie in season - remember, this changes throughout the year. Sometimes you can find charts like these to help you plan your meals in advance...which is in season (affordable) and what isn't (you'll be spending a little more).

Fill up your cart with a nice variety of whatever produce is in season or on sale. Buy organic whenever your budget allows. Not only is it better for the environment, but also your body. *hint hint* And it tastes better too!

SEAFOOD/MEAT
Usually the back of the store, you will find the meat and fish counters (mine are in the far back left corner). Opt for chicken breasts (cook in bulk and have them handy), lean ground beef (this makes for some good burgers) and pork, and sustainable fish (gold fish doesn't count).

EGGS/DAIRY
Along the other side of the grocery store, you will find the dairy section (again, mine is by the fish). Stock up on skim milk and/or almond milk, non-fat greek yogurt, eggs, and low-fat cheeses.

The middle aisles are where you will find all the processed, pre-packaged foods. These contain additives, preservatives, and other artificial ingredients.

If you think you're going to freeze once you walk in the door...not sure where to start...make a shopping list. Works every time.

Making a shopping list before going to the grocery store is important and helps you stay on track. Try e-mailing or texting yourself a list (I do this with Mark is in his "cuddle mode" and I only have one free hand & a cell phone), so you have it on your phone when you go shopping. Yes, text yourself... so you can't lose your list.

This is a biggie... you must... EAT BEFORE YOU SHOP! Remember to eat something, anything (healthy preferably) that satisfies your hunger before heading to the store. Otherwise, you will end up purchasing products you don't need and will spend too much time at the store (I've done this before and it never goes well...).

If you can't tolerate dairy, don't buy it. Period.

Do what is right for you. Listen to your body.

I stick to a primarily paleo lifestyle consisting of lean proteins, healthy fats, fruits and veggies. This is not for everyone.
