Feel More Rested (Without Sleeping In!)

Written By: Shannon Boyce

Do you wake up tired? Are you dragging yourself through everyday activities? It happens. In fact, many of us struggle to stay focused and energized. There are a number of reasons for this. You might not be getting enough sleep at night. Or have too much on your plate. Or are dealing with stress. These issues? They can make you feel downright exhausted. That feeling can drain us of our joy. Not anymore. These tips will help you feel more rested... without sleeping in.

Aim To Get a Better Quality Sleep. You have an early morning meeting. That means your alarm will beep-beep-beep before you know it. How can you wake up feeling like you got a full eight hours? Focus on improving the quality of your sleep. You can do that by: relaxing your mind before bed, (turn off all electronic devices an hour before you hit the hay), setting a quieter morning alarm (a gradually louder sound or a peaceful song will make the process of waking up feel more natural), and giving yourself a comfortable environment (have enough pillows and proper bedding).

Make More Time For Exercise. When you are tired...the last thing you want to do is head to the gym. Or pop in a workout DVD. Who has energy for that? Re-think that no exercise mentality. Studies have found that physical activity - that lasts for more than ten minutes - will increase the amount of oxygen in your system. That gives you more energy throughout the day. Working out has also been found to boost endorphins. These brain chemicals make you feel amazing. Another bonus? Exercise makes it easier for you to fall asleep at night. That means more energy and a better nights sleep.

Drink Lots and Lots Of Water. Are you getting enough? It can be difficult to drink enough water throughout the day. But the next time you want to skip out on that tall glass of water...don't. Poor hydration can cause fatigue. As a result, you might find yourself feel unfocused, foggy, and irritable. So make sure you drink plenty of fluids. Especially when you hit mid-day. Many of us feel extra sluggish and tired during this time. The solution is simple: drink a glass of ice-cold water. This will keep you hydrated and give you that extra energy boost you need.

More Tips To Feel Well Rested:
  • Add protein rich foods to your diet. This will help you feel more energized and improve your ability to react quickly.
  • Embrace natural light. It can be tempting to stay indoor and shut out any and all sunlight. Don't! Open up the curtains or go for a walk. It will make you feel more awake and alert.
  • Make sure you are getting enough iron. Women need 18-30 milligrams of iron per day. Unfortunately, many women are low on iron. Choose whole grains, leafy greens, or seafood to enjoy healthy sources of iron. You'll feel well rested - and more energized - in no time flat.
